It can be hard to focus on putting our Heathenry into practice when we’re exhausted from chasing around a Toddler Tornado all day. Not everyone realizes how difficult it can be for parents to find time for even the most basic observances, much less managing to go out and find a group to blót with. Drafting, in handspinning, is how you prepare your fiber for your drop spindle. Pre-drafting is when you need to thin out your fiber ahead of time before drafting. In my previous article I discussed drop spindles and how to acquire one. This article will discuss different materials you can use in handspinning and some places you can find them.
Handspinning with a drop spindle is an art form that was once necessity. All over the globe from the early history of humans to modern times people have employed the use of various types of spindles and eventually spinning wheels in some cases to create threads of different types. These threads would create clothing and other useful textiles. In this beginner series of articles I will be providing a very basic overview on handspinning.
For more than half of my life the art of hand spinning has appealed to me. Spinning wheels especially. The various wheels I would see in art, old photos, and antique shops always seemed like more than a tool to create yarn and thread. One of the things that really brought me to Heathenry were the stories of Frau Holda and a spindle that led a young girl to her domain.
