In Snorri Sturulson’s Prose Edda, the jötnar are portrayed as amoral at best and dangerous, destructive, and immoral at worst. In our decidedly Christianized modern society, these things feel very bad and frightening and the knee-jerk reaction is to recoil from and demonize them. This is what has happened with the jötnar, despite their integral role in the Norse pantheon; including the lineage of most of the gods and their frequent romantic interludes with the Vanir and Æsir.
